Cat placemat

Sew your own cat placemat #catplacemat #sewing #freepattern

Our cat has a the annoying habit of spilling water all over the floor while drinking 🤦🏼‍♀️. We’ve got some laminate flooring which should cope well with some spatters, but for some reason the flooring swells up if water gets in the cracks. So whenever Bob, our cat, drinks, we have to clean the floor 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️. Do you have a silly pet as well that leaves their watering or food station a mess?

My wife told me to sew up a cute placemat for the bowls. You don’t have to tell me twice to sew up something 😂. I came up with these cute cat placemats. I made them out of oil cloth (Wachstuch in German) – the fabric you use for outdoor tablecloths with a plastic right side and a non-slip left side. That way we can clean them easily and they don’t move around on the floor. Bonus: this type of fabric is quite easy to work with.

Choosing a size

We’ve compiled 4 different sizes for the placemats. The smallest version (s) is 21x26cm (8.3 x 10.3in) and is large enough for one small bowl. The largest placemat (xl) is 30x38cm (11.3 x 15in) and is large enough for 1 large or 2 small bowls.

Instructions

  1. Print out the template for the placemat. Make sure to print the document at 100%.
  2. Choose a size (check the sizing chart).
  3. Cut and paste together the template.
  4. Draw the outline of the placemat onto the fabric.
  5. Cut out the cat-shaped place mat. No need to add seam allowances as the raw edges are encased.
  6. Draw the cat face onto the placemat with a waterproof pen. I use carbon paper to trace the paper onto the placemat. Some table cloth fabrics also imprint if you write on them – so you can trace the outlines of the face onto it by re-drawing the face on the paper on top of the placemat.
  7. Time to finish the raw edges with bias tape. Below I show you 2 different versions of sewing bias tape.
  8. Secure the stitches.

Done!

Bias tape finish: Version 1 – classical approach

In the classic approach, you’ll start sewing on the back of the mat! Open up the bias tape and place it face up against the edge of the mat. Using a straight stitch, sew along the first foldline.

Tip: For a clean finish and crisp look: Sew a scant of 1/8in to the right of the foldline. When you then fold the bias tape over, you’ll notice a perfectly clean and crisp fold!

Now fold the bias tape to the right side (the front of the mat). Take your time folding over the bias tape at the edges and around the curves. Now top-stitch along the edge of the bias tape. Make sure the seam lands on top of the bias tape on the back (i.e., catches the bias tape). The more neatly you fold the bias tape over to the front side, the better the result. If the stitches on the back does not catch the bias tape, then don’t worry too much, no one will look at the back of the mat 😂

Bias tape finish: Version 2 – hidden seam

In the version with the hidden seam, you’ll start on the front of the mat (the right side). Open the bias tape and place it neatly, so that it lines up with the edge of the mat. The trick now is NOT to sew in the foldline, but sew 1-2 needle positions right of the fold line. This is crucial, otherwise the width won’t line up when folding the bias tape over.

Next, fold the bias tape over to the back of the mat. You will notice, that the center fold will not line up with the actual foldline! That is ok! Pull the bias tape tight around and clip it with some wonder clips or fix it with some pins. Turn the mat back to the front side (the right side). Now, instead of top-stitching, you’ll stitch in the ditch. Using a straight stitch, sew inbetween the seam of the bias tape and the mat, so that the stitch is (nearly) invisible. On the back, the bias tape is neatly “top-stitched” 😍.
