Instructions

  1. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl
  2. Warm up the coconut oil or shea butter in a pan or microwave and add it to dry ingredients.
  3. Add food color, essential oils and baking decor to your liking.
  4. Knead the mix until all ingredients are well incorporated and use your hands to form egg-shaped bath bombs. The mixture should be moist enough so that the eggs keep their shape easily. If it is still too powder-like, just add 1-2 tablespoons of coconut oil or shea butter to the mix.
  5. Put the eggs in a cool place to let dry.
  6. Wrap them in a nice package as a present or use them yourself in your own bathtub 😁

Tipp: coconut oil vs. shea butter

Personally, I prefer coconut oil over shea butter for the smell of it. But we found out that the consistency of the mixture with shea butter keeps the dragon egg shape much better.

Tipp: food color

Don’t use liquid food color. It already reacts with the dry ingredients and your bath bomb mixture will start fizzing. The bath bomb won't work later on in the bathtub.

At first, my idea was to use some dubbing silicone to make a mould to get the bath bombs in the right shape. Dubbing silicon consists of two components, dries very quick and quite easily available. Unfortunately the price was a little to high for me, since I didn’t want to spend that much money on this project. So, instead, I just used the cheapest silicone I could find in the nearest home improvement store. For the stencil I use air-drying modelling clay. Of course there is a huge difference in the quality of these molds, since dubbing silicone would make a much more detailed and smoother form. But since the bath bombs don’t need to be very detailed, the moulds are good enough.

Tip: glitter

Please only use baking decor for the bath bombs. If you, for example, use real glitter, it will stay in your bathtub and on your body for eternity! 😂

We have based our recipe on one from Bathely but changed some things according to our experience and liking. To dry off the bombs we set them outside, where it was cold so that the liquid oils in the mix could harden.

I will most likely revive this project shortly before Christmas! Of course we won’t be making dragon eggs but “normal” round bath bombs as Christmas presents for our family and friends!

Tipp: backing supplies

For this project it is safe to use baking decor that has already expired. So a good way to recycle old stuff, that might have gotten forgotten in your kitchen cabinet 😂

Tipp: bath essence

Instead of coconut oil/shea butter and essential oils you can also use an oil-based, liquid bath essence. You will need to add about 65ml of it to the dry ingredients.

I hope you are feeling inspired and excited to start making your own dragon eggs!
